Our Story
It has been a long road to Summerlin, and what a journey it has been!
Chef Melissa Donahue arrived in Southwest Florida to take the helm as Executive Chef at Red Fish Blue Fish on Sanibel Island. With passion, dedication, and a relentless pursuit of culinary excellence, she quickly became one of the area’s most respected culinary voices. Shortly after relocating from the original restaurant, in partnership with investor and dear friends Gretchen, Mark and Molly Valade, Sweet Melissa’s Café was born.
For fourteen incredible years, Sweet Melissa’s became an island favorite—welcoming both tourists and locals with its relaxed charm, an exceptional wine selection, and unforgettable meals. It became more than just a restaurant; it was a place where casual gatherings turned into cherished memories, and where special occasions became truly extraordinary.
Through the years, Chef Melissa faced challenges head-on, earning a James Beard Award nomination, appearing on The Food Network, and even traveling back to her former home in New Orleans to claim victory in a culinary competition.
Then, the world changed. The pandemic tested the resilience of the restaurant industry, but with imagination, quick thinking, and the unwavering dedication of her loyal staff, Sweet Melissa’s pressed forward. And just when it seemed like they had weathered the worst, Hurricane Ian struck—devastating the beloved café and forcing yet another chapter to unfold.
Against all odds, the Sweet Melissa’s spirit lived on. With an abbreviated menu and a small corner of the kitchen at Island Pizza, the team continued to serve their cherished guests—both familiar faces and new friends. Their support and encouragement meant the world.
And now, the next step in the journey begins. Welcome to Sweet Melissa’s at our new home on Summerlin Road!
We couldn’t be more thrilled to return, bringing you the signature chef-driven cuisine that Melissa and partner Tom are passionately crafting. Whether you’re stopping by for a cocktail with the world-famous Kevin O’Malley (K.O.) at the bar or sitting down to experience the dishes that have made Sweet Melissa’s a beloved institution, we invite you to join us in this exciting new chapter.
Here’s to the next fourteen years—cheers!
